More Ways to Reign

With TerraForge we truly wanted to make a free to play trading card game model that would work. We knew off the bat that making a free to play trading card game would be a daunting task in its own right. Let's face it the premise of a trading card game revolves around a revenue model that requires players to spend money on card packs.

Some players will frown at the idea of spending while others will want to spend in order to grow their card collection more quickly. To alleviate this problem we came up with the idea of incorporating several unique game modes that could cater to all players. Ultimately, we want to make a game that is equally accessible to all.

Here you can find out about all of the different game modes intended to be incorporated at the TerraForge release. Some of these game modes will feel familiar to veterans of other online trading card games, while others are completely novel and will offer a refreshing change of pace.

Standard

In standard play, there basically are no restrictions. All cards may be used, standard victory and defeat conditions apply, and players use their own Avatars and unlocked abilities in games. This is a traditional trading card game strategic format that tends to play in the favor of players with larger card collections. Standard play can either be in ranked or practice format.

At the end of each ranked standard season, players with the highest competitive ratings will be rewarded with special cosmetic prizes that can only be attained via ranked standard play.

Limited

In limited play, some cards are restricted from being used. This restriction typically applies to powerful cards that may only be attained through the completion of dungeons. In limited play, standard victory and defeat conditions apply, and players use their own Avatars but cannot use special abilities that have been acquired by means of dungeon rewards. This format is very similar to the standard play format but will not favor players who have spent additional time acquiring special cards and abilities via dungeons. Limited play can either be in ranked or practice format.

At the end of each ranked limited season, players with the highest competitive ratings will be rewarded with special cosmetic prizes that can only be attained via ranked limited play.

Draft

In draft play, a player will be presented with three Eternals (colors) to choose from. The player will then sequentially open packs containing three cards of equal rarity. Each of the three cards is guaranteed to have a threshold cost requiring at least one of the three selected Eternals (colors). The player will then draft one of the three presented cards to contribute towards their draft deck. Players will be given three opportunities throughout the entire draft process to reshuffle the presented three cards. Once thirty cards have been selected through the draft process, players will then select any Avatar and any set of abilities they choose. All players will have all non-dungeon awarded Avatar abilities available and at maximum level.

Once an Avatar and ability set are selected, they cannot be changed throughout the remainder of the draft. A draft will end once a player has attained either twelve victories or three losses, whichever comes first.

Unlike standard and limited play, there is no practice draft format, only ranked. At the end of each ranked draft season, players with the highest competitive ratings will be rewarded with special cosmetic prizes that can only be attained via ranked draft play.

Rotational

Rotational play mode can be seen as the great equalizer. It is a play mode that is unique and novel to TerraForge, and caters to creating an almost perfectly balanced game setup for all players.

In rotational play, all players will be presented with the same pool of fifty cards. Players must then build a forty card deck using this pool. Remember, there can be up to four copies of each individual card in a deck (except for a few special cards). All players will be allowed to select any of the Avatars available in the game; however, only specific abilities will be available. The available abilities will be common to all players. The available card pool and available Avatar abilities are random and rotate once a week.

The rotational format is free to enter and allows all players to play with the same available Avatars and cards. This means the rotational meta always remains fresh and spicy, as well as ensuring there is no favor towards players with larger card collections. This makes rotational format the perfect choice for newer players.

Similar to the draft format, there is only a ranked rotational format. At the end of each ranked rotational season, players with the highest competitive ratings will be rewarded with special cosmetic prizes that can only be attained via ranked rotational play.
